Math is a second language—and your child is still learning to speak it

Learning math is a lot like learning another language—complete with grammar, vocabulary, and a learning curve. Here's why that's actually good news.

Have you ever listened to someone explain a math concept and felt like they must have just landed from another planet? Or heard two people argue over a math solution and felt convinced they're pranking you? Or read a word problem and started to question whether you even know how to read English?

Just about everyone has felt this way at some point. That's because learning math really is like learning another language. Math has grammar (rules), symbols with their own meaning, and vocabulary that had to be standardized for mathematicians to communicate their ideas. It makes sense that all of this sounds like gibberish until you get used to a brand new way of thinking.

The learning curve is real—and it's normal

This is good news. Just like learning a new language, there's a definite learning curve: the time it takes for your brain to process and adopt a new system. I use this analogy with my students all the time, and it's usually the moment something clicks: oh, I'm not broken—I'm just still learning the language.

In language acquisition, this looks like building up enough vocabulary before you can piece sentences together or follow conversation. In math, it looks like learning enough facts and rules before you can reason out solutions to problems.

Getting past each learning curve feels like leveling up. Learning isn't a linear progression (or a straight line, for anyone not yet learning algebra). It happens in stages, building up sets of words or rules, then breaking through to the next level.

Math builds on itself

Some confusion comes from the way math stacks. Think of building the floors of a house. You can't skip to the fourth floor without building the bottom three. That's why the basics are called foundational skills: everything else is stacked on top.

Getting stuck on advanced skills sometimes means you need to go back and strengthen that foundation. This isn't failure. It's just how the subject works. In my sessions, that's often where we start: figuring out which floor has the crack in it, then shoring it up so everything above holds.

The farther up you go, the more math uses shortcuts to move through ideas faster. Multiplication is just a shortcut for adding groups of the same number over and over. You wouldn't want to keep adding forever, so you learn multiplication, and so on up the ladder.

It's like learning slang—it sounds like gibberish if you're not from around here, but it's all packed with meaning.

The rules don't change on you

Here's even better news: math, unlike grammar or context in spoken languages, can't change without extremely strong evidence and convincing arguments. Once you've learned a rule or fact, it's always true no matter where in the world you go. 1+1 will always equal 2. 2×2 will always equal 4.

That doesn't mean there's only one way to do things. The beauty of math is that many roads lead to the same place. You might solve for x by distributing first while your friend divides first, but by using the same rules, you'll both arrive at the same answer.

Fluency looks like confidence

That's when you know you've become fluent in math—when you can discuss method and understand that there are several correct strategies for solving the same problem. Math anxiety is learned. So is math confidence. And just like fluency in a language, confidence in math is built one level at a time.

If you're stuck on one of those floors right now, that's not a character flaw. It just means the foundation needs attention—and that's exactly the kind of work I do with my students.
