A teacher who left the classroom to tutor full-time

My background in psychology and math education shapes how I support students

I first started in education through seven years of individual tutoring and test-prep group instruction. I then became state certified in Math and Science secondary education, and taught middle- and high-school classrooms for another four years before deciding to open my own tutoring service.

As an educator, I recognized how stress and anxiety are major obstacles for students across ages and backgrounds, especially in math. My strength is my calm but firm presence while utilizing mindfulness techniques and my background in psychology to guide students through these obstacles towards independent, productive struggle and ultimately greater confidence.

I am based in Mount Airy and work with families across Northwest Philadelphia.

Math Anxiety

Most students I work with don't have a math problem. They have an anxiety problem that shows up in math class.

What it looks like

It usually hits around 5th or 6th grade. A student who was fine in 4th grade suddenly shuts down at the sight of a fraction. That shutdown is a stress response, and it can make familiar skills feel inaccessible.

How I help

My psychology background helps me see what's happening beneath the surface. In sessions, we review the math and practice habits that help a student stay calm through the moment when they'd normally give up.

Not therapy

Clinical anxiety belongs with a therapist. In tutoring, I teach math in a way that takes the emotional side seriously, because that is often what blocks a student from using what they know.

Test Prep

I prepare students for the ISEE, SSAT, SAT, and ACT, with a focus on the admissions tests Northwest Philadelphia families deal with most.

Diagnostic first

Prep starts with a full-length practice test, so I can see your child's current strengths and gaps. From there, we choose the skills that deserve the most time.

Read the test

Every standardized test has its own logic. We practice recognizing what the test is asking, how it phrases familiar math, and when a problem is trying to distract you.

Calm under pressure

For many students, timed sections and unfamiliar formats create the real pressure. I build anxiety-management strategies into our sessions so the test day routine feels practiced.

What families say

Not only did my child’s SAT score go up over 100 points, but the work carried into school all year. She looked forward to every session and always wanted to do her best.
