In almost a decade of teaching math, in classrooms and in private tutoring sessions, I have never met a student who isn't, deep down, capable of doing math. I've met students who lack motivation, students who say they're "bad at math." But once they sit down and really engage, they immediately reveal an innate capacity for quantitative reasoning and problem-solving.
So why do so many students—by some estimates, 20 to 30 percent—claim that they're bad at math?
It might be the same reason so many parents stop in their tracks at the sight of math homework. Why do they keep changing math? When did they start learning this in 6th grade? It makes sense that parents struggle to help when roughly 64% of U.S. adults report feeling math anxiety themselves. The anxiety many of us start to develop around 5th or 6th grade, when math class gets genuinely difficult, tends to only get worse as we get older.
What is math anxiety?
Math anxiety has been observed in the U.S. since at least the 1950s, likely alongside the expansion of secondary education to include more people than ever before. As more teenagers completed more years of school, the math they were expected to learn became more complex. Suddenly, significant numbers of students displayed symptoms of fear, anxiety, and extreme stress when confronted with math problems.
Since then, research has shown that this emotional response to math often blocks students more than any real lack of math skills. Cognitive disorders like dyscalculia do occur, and we'll come back to those. For most struggling students, though, the barrier is emotional, not intellectual.
When the body goes into stress, the brain responds accordingly. Heart rate increases. Adrenaline spikes. Thoughts race. Long-term memory becomes harder to access, and time feels like it's speeding by.
This also explains why some students are better test-takers than others. Many experience test-specific anxiety that blocks them from performing as well as they would in a more relaxed environment. In both cases, anxiety can trigger a fight-or-flight response. Students may become angry, shut down, or give up on the problem just to escape the stress.
For most struggling students, the barrier is emotional, not intellectual.
The good news: these symptoms point to an attainable solution. Students can learn techniques to stay calm, recognize their anxiety, and work through it. These habits ease anxiety the more they're used, building resilience and confidence over time.
How do you know if your child has math anxiety?
It's important that math anxiety not be confused with cognitive disorders like dyscalculia, or with genuine gaps in knowledge. Cognitive disorders require medical and psychological evaluation. Knowledge gaps need to be identified through academic testing, which a teacher or tutor can administer.
If your child has been tested and doesn't have a disorder or obvious skill gaps—especially if they never had trouble until 5th, 6th, or 7th grade—that's a strong sign the issue is anxiety-related. Disorders and gaps tend to show up as real obstructions to attempting the math at all: slower processing, random guesses that don't follow any reasoning.
Before requesting a formal evaluation, look for these signs:
- A clear shift in attitude between English or history homework and math homework
- Frustration with the whole subject, not just specific types of problems
- Avoidance behaviors—finding distractions, acting out, or stalling when it's time to do math
- A lack of motivation to persevere, as opposed to trying hard and still being confused
- Better performance in calm, low-pressure environments with plenty of time and support
The most difficult part is that anxiety usually overlaps with other problems. An underlying gap in skills can produce anxiety on top of it. The key is identifying whether anxiety is the primary blocker.
Sometimes the best approach is to ask your child directly: Do you understand it and then forget or freeze up? Or are you just totally lost? Maybe they're fine during a lesson but shut down when they start independent practice. Maybe they're comfortable with references and examples but panic when those are taken away.
If a student can access their math knowledge outside the pressure of a classroom or test, that's a strong sign of math anxiety.
Can you really be "bad at math?"
U.S. national testing shows that up to 40% of eighth graders and 78% of high school seniors lack basic math proficiency, so it can seem like some kids really are "bad" at math. Foundational gaps can be serious, but they still don't mean a child lacks ability.
In my years as an educator, I have never met a student who truly could not do math—though I've met many who had skipped past important skills or needed different supports than their peers. For the vast majority who feel lost in math class, it's a missing foundation holding them back.
Recent surveys have found that basic concepts like fractions, numeracy, geometry, and word problems are the major missing building blocks when students begin to struggle in 5th or 6th grade. Even students who have these traditional skills can go on to struggle with the deeper reasoning required for problem-solving, critical thinking, and multi-step tasks.
Any combination of these gaps can lead a student to believe they're "bad" at math. But every one of them can be learned, strengthened, and built back up with the right support and a willingness to try.
What's next?
Dealing with math anxiety is not difficult for most students, but it does require consistent support and dedication to build new habits.
Frankly, it starts at home. The honest truth is that kids learn math anxiety from the adults around them. Fear is taught. Just as children learn to be afraid of a hot stove or of running into traffic, they pick it up from the cues adults provide. Math anxiety gets passed around from adults who suffer it themselves. It's not just parents, either—the idea that only certain people are "math people" is so pervasive that you encounter it among teachers, too.
A child who is around adults who respond to math with apprehension is going to learn that math is something only certain people can do.
The first step is adopting a positive attitude about math at home. This sets a student up to feel more motivated to face their anxiety, which in turn helps them calm down enough to actually focus on learning again.
That's the perfect moment to introduce personalized support. And it's best to start early. Once a student has a few positive experiences with problems they thought were too hard, a new feedback loop takes hold. They build confidence. They develop resilience to attempt harder problems.
